Tonight's beer: Flying Dog Double Dog
Opens with a nice balance between complex bitterness—grapefruit and other citrus, pine, flowers, grass—and relatively straightforward caramel-toasty sweetness. Vague hints of an almost barleywine-esque butter/whiskey character in the distance. Stays pretty much balanced all the way through the finish; dries out just a little bit.
A little thicker than medium-bodied, with a lot of prickle that's probably mostly booze—not burn, just prickle—nothing shocking for 11.5% ABV. Substantially drying, pleasantly filling, finally warming in the belly.
A drinkable beer, living on the border between Double IPAs and Barleywines. Complex and surprisingly well-balanced—especially compared to things like Palate Wrecker and Un*Earthly; intense as heck, and decently well-integrated. A big beer, for a night when I needed a big beer. Huzzah.
