Flying Dog Lucky SOB

Tonight's beer: Flying Dog Lucky SOB

Flying Dog Lucky SOB

Deeply-caramelized toast, hints of more straight-up bread—but none of the buttery elements I sometimes get from caramel-rich beers (especially barleywines). Earthy-peaty bitterness standing alongside. Impressions of smoke, dried almost burnt fruits, something like tea. Dries out slowly, eventually.

Kinda bready—thick and a little soft—with notable stickiness. Softly-drying and finally something very close to refreshing. Decently carbonated, or a little better.

Yum. Sure, this beer was released for St. Patrick's Day—a day when people with no Irish in them at all take advantage of the excuse to get utterly drunk, frequently on lite "beers" that have been dyed a nearly-radioactive green—but this is a solid take on a typically accessible style, with a pretty impressive flavor-to-booze ratio. Intense and pretty complex, nicely balanced and integrated; immensely drinkable.
