König Ludwig Weissbier

Tonight's beer: König Ludwig Weissbier

König Ludwig Weissbier

Bright bananas to open, with threads of apples, pears, white grapes, and maybe a peach (or something similar) or two; pale bready sweetness backing that up, tempered slightly by peppery wheaty character and some tart and some tang. Dark baking spices—mainly cloves and allspice—mesh with gentle grassy-floral bitterness to provide counterpoint if not necessarily balance.

Very light-bodied, and somehow manages to be simultaneously highly-carbonated and silken-smooth—a trick that weizens seem to be the only beer style able to pull off regularly. Drying, cleansing, powerfully refreshing.

A delicious hefeweizen, just about exactly to-style. Plenty of flavor for a relatively low ABV: intense and complex, nicely integrated, clearly stable if not exactly balanced. Astoundingly drinkable. Definitely worthy of the brewer's family tradition. :-)
