Lagunitas Brown Shugga'

Tonight's beer: Lagunitas Brown Shugga'

Lagunitas Brown Shugga'

A complex braided tapestry: piney-citrussy bitterness with threads of flowers and grass and perfume, all tangled up in bready-toasty buttery caramel sweetness. Flickers of peat, chocolate, dried fruit, spice around the edges. A thin strand of smoky bourbon in the distance.

Maybe a bit on the light side of medium-bodied, substantially sticky, decently carbonated. A trace of alcohol heat, but nothing like I'd expect for 9.9% ABV. Softly drying, bordering on refreshing; filling and satisfying and warming in the belly.

An amazingly drinkable beer, almost like a barleywine—a delicious barleywine. Intense and complex and integrated and balanced. Probably wouldn't age like some more conventional barleywines: There's plenty of power here, but the hops are fading quickly, I think, and I don't expect the malts would be as interesting without that balance. Doesn't matter much to me—this is the last of this for now.
