Fruity-caramel sweet to start, with dark hints of toast and toast creeping up: Cherries and plums, chocolate and earth and leather. Spice, peat, smoke trailing behind. Grassy-floral bitterness emerges around the finish as the beer struggles to dry out. Maybe a him hint of brandy and/or rum.

Medium-bodied, kinda chewy, decently carbonated. Moderately long finish turns toward drying and refreshing. Not a lot of warning of the 10% ABV. Some gentle warmth in the belly.

A pretty impressive beer. Paler than many quads, but laden with flavor—intense and complex, balanced overall and nicely-integrated, surprisingly drinkable. Probably my favorite of the beers I've had from New Belgium, at least recently. Nice.
