Tonight's beer: New Holland Dragon's Milk
Dark bread, caramel, toast; roast threads of chocolate and coffee prominent, along with a heavy dollop of vanilla. Earth, peat, ash solidly in the background, with vague hints of spice, burnt fruits and dark spirits like brandy and rum and bourbon.
Medium-bodied, decently carbonated. A good bit of syrupy stickiness, some bready chewiness. Distinct (and pleasant) strong boozy warmth. Drying intoi and through the very long finish. Dense and mostly smooth.
Nicely drinkable Big American Stout, laden with bourbon-ish oaken character. Intensely and complexly flavorful, well-integrated if slightly heavy-handed with the vanilla (without adequate counterpoint, to my palate). Strong, but gracefully and supplely so. Delicious, in spite of the minor nit-picking.
