Tonight's beer: Ommegang Duvel Rustica
Funky and dry—barnyard and straw and mousey-smack; tons of earthy impressions. Grassy-floral-spicy bitterness arises through the middle; some pale fruits and light-caramel-bread character appears briefly toward the finish, then vanishes in a cloud of almost white-wine-like dryness.
Very light-bodied, with lots of prickle that might be carbonation and might be booze. Massively drying, with a long and refreshing finish; traces of something mineral—almost flinty.
I wasn't expecting this to be a Bretty saison, but that's about what it tastes like to me—nothing like Duvel, really. Complex and intense to be sure, but it's hard to say about anything else—I'm genuinely unsure what the brewer intended. Pretty drinkable, given the funk, but I suspect that either this bottle sat around too long, or there were lots of Duvel drinkers who got a bit of a rude surprise. I'm liking this a good bit better as it goes on: either my palate is adjusting, or the beer needed to be a bit warmer than it was (and probably warmer than the 40F recommended serving temperature on the bottle).
