Tonight's beer: Smuttynose Zinneke
Deeply roasty to start: dark chocolate and coffee; caramel grazing with dark sweetness—hints of molasses, too—then partially eclipsed by shades of earth, grass, peat. Background flashes of spice, burnt fruits, vanilla, dark spirits (whiskey, brandy, rum).
Pretty light-bodied, a bit of syrupy-stickiness then some good carbonation. A vague prickle of boozy warmth, then substantially drying. Finishes pretty clean and cleansing, almost refreshing.
A completely delicious beer, nicely treading a fine and fuzzy border between Belgian and American approaches to brewing. Flavorful as heck: intense and complex; masterfully integrated and balanced. Alcohol is potent—8.4% ABV—but carried with almost alarming subtlety and grace. This is another big beer Smuttynose has hit out of the park.
