Tonight's beer: Tröegs Flying Mouflan (2012)
Deeply-toasty, caramelized almost to the point of buttery; strong impressions of toffee. Ample grassy-floral bitterness to balance the sweetness, with traces of pine and citrus around the back, and a vague chocolaty presence. Spice flickers on the back end, as the beer dries out some (even though it's never all that sweet). Dim hints of whiskey, maybe.
Thick and chewy, with a bit of syrupy-stickiness. Alarmingly little alcohol heat for 9.3% ABV. Pretty decent carbonation; nicely drying toward the long finish. Pleasantly filling, with just a touch of warmth in the belly: an afterglow.
A delicious beer, from start to finish. Fresh, this beer is practically a Black (Double) IPA, but it has enough substance to mellow beautifully into a marvelously drinkable Barleywine. Complex and intense, integrated and balanced. Remarkably little warning of the boozy payload. This has probably joined the small list of beers we keep around to age; I bet it has at least another good year in it.
