Tonight's beer: Southern Tier 2XSteam
Bready-toasty-caramel sweetness neatly counterpoised by grassy-floral-earthy bitterness. Flickers of nuts and toffee, pine and fruits in the background. It doesn't progress the way lots of other beers do: it takes a position between sweet and bitter, and it stays there from start to finish.
Pretty thick, decently-carbonated. Kinda soft and very chewy. Gently drying, almost refreshing; remarkably little alcohol heat for 8%. Kinda long finish, a little sticky.
This is an interesting beer, clearly exactly what the brewers intended but wedged firmly between styles. It really comes across well as a California Common Beer, but it's brewed to bock/doppelbock strength. Pretty intense, more balanced than complex, nicely integrated. Pretty straighforward, in the way of most lager styles. Highly drinkable, with little warning of te substantial booze payload. Delicious, all the way around.
