Tonight's beer: Deschutes/Hair of the Dog Collage

Deschutes/Hair of the Dog Collage

Smoke and tart juicy fruits, dark bread and toast; earth and peat in the interstices. Grassy-floral bitterness dimly in the background, with dried/candied dark fruits, tobacco, dark baking spices vaguely possible. Definitely some tannic stuff happening, especially toward the finish.

Kinda thick and chewy, with some decent carbonation. Just a trace of alcohol heat—nothing like that I'd expect from 11.6% ABV. Not so much drying as tartly puckering. Some stickiness but also some odd hardness (almost but not quite mineral).

This is about as complex as one might expect, given that it's a blend of four separately complex beers. I definitely taste the Dissident and the Adam (I think it's the Adam—it's the really smokey one). Intense as hell, to boot. Reasonably well-integrated, but I'm not sure "balanced" is even reasonably possible as a description. Definitely a sipping beer, but an entirely pleasant and rewarding one.
