Tonight's beer: Fantôme Hiver
Barnyardy—leather and sweet and straw and tobacco—on top of earthy-spicy bitterness, backed by some pale-bready sweetness. Very dry fruity threads around the middle, with dark floral grassy herbal impressions in the background. Some pale-fruity sweetness emerges right on the finish.
Light-bodied, seems decently-carbonated. Astonishingly drying, with a vague and gentle kiss of boozy heat. A little stickiness, but mostly clean, tending toward cleansing; refreshing for 8% ABV.
A powerfully complex beer; lots of intensity driven by a relatively high alcohol content. Nicely integrated, pretty well-balanced (a little dominated by the funk, but funk is powerful stuff). Definitely drinkable, but insists that one pay close attention. Substantial strength carried gracefully. Another first beer from another brewery, another fantastic introduction. Delicious.
