Tonight's beer: Heavy Seas The Big DIPA
Citrus and pine, flowers and grass. Orange the main citrus, kinda juicy-sweet to open; then, some bready-toasty caramel sweetness, with a subtle brush of vanilla. Dries out abruptly and thoroughly through and beyond the finish. A complex braid of bitter and sweet, then quite dry.
Maybe a shade on the heavier side of medium-bodied, and amply carbonated. A little chewy; lots of resinous stickiness on a long and drying finish that tends strongly to the refreshing. Practically zero hint of the 10.5% ABV.
Surprisingly not-unbalanced, for a Double IPA—I can actually taste malt character (as opposed to just presence) in this one; plenty of bitterness, though. Complex and intense, overall, and marvelously integrated; drinkable to the point that it's hard not to slurp the beer. I like this beer, a lot—not typical for me with oak-aged IPAs—but I'm well aware I might not be typical in that. Always makes me happy to see a brewery as local to me as Heavy Seas make a beer as good as this.
