Tonight's beer: Maine Beer Mean Old Tom
Very dark and roasty—dominated by dark chocolate, but some coffee—with strong bread and caramel impressions. Vanilla a solid presence through the middle, then the beer dries out with earthy-grassy bitterness joining the roastiness. Something like burnt fruit and something like ash, flickering around the perimeter.
Thick, dense, slippery-smooth; lots of carbonation. Finish is kinda long and roasty-drying. Some bready chewiness, not a lot of stickiness. A bit filling, a bit refreshing.
Delicious, completely. A very well-made stout, with vanilla making for an added layer of complexity—not dominated by the vanilla, at all. Complex and intense, beautifully integrated and nicely balanced. Massively drinkable—at 6.5% ABV, it's maybe a bit big to session, but the temptation would be strong. This is the first beer I've had from this brewer, and it's an awesome introduction.
