Southern Tier Iniquity

This afternoon's beer: Southern Tier Iniquity

Southern Tier Iniquity

Pine and citrus, wrapped in dark chocolate; grassy-floral undertones smeared on burnt-toasted bread. Some caramel struggles to the surface around the middle, abetted by strands of juicy sweetness; hints of earth and peat arise toward the finish, as the beer dries out and careers toward a long and bitter end.

Thoroughly medium-bodied, with some bready chewiness and a healthy dollop of resinous-syrupy stickiness. Pretty well-carbonated. A bit drying, and surprisingly refreshing for such a big beer—with practically no warning of the 9% ABV.

Wow! This was the first Black IPA I ever had, before I was even clear on the style; it's clear why I fell for the style: even though this beer sets the bar quite high, it sets a wonderful tone. Intense and complex, balanced and integrated, delightfully drinkable. An excellent opener to Black IPA Day, here at Chez Rabe.
