The Bruery Smoking Wood

Tonight's beer: The Bruery Smoking Wood

The Bruery Smoking Wood

Smoke and coffee and dark chocolate, on top of dark bread toasted just this side of burnt. Caramel and vanilla threaded through, with earthy-grassy-peaty-peppery bitterness floating past. Some of the caramel is to the point of buttery (which is how my palate parses things, sometimes, and isn't diacetyl whatever that's an off flavor; I think I'm sure of this). Dim hints of an almost sour tang, which is appropriate for a porter, I think.

Kinda thick, kinda dense; more than a little soft and chewy. A little alcohol heat, but barely a prickle—nothing like what I'd expect, given the 13% ABV(!). A little sticky on the finish, gently drying. Softly warming in the belly.

Wow. There's a lot to this beer. Crazy complex and intense as hell, beautifully integrated and surprisingly well-balanced. Pretty drinkable, given the obvious strength, but an awesome sipping beer. The Bruery's beers are usually expensive around here, but they're usually delicious. This is an awesome beer, delicious from start to finish.
