Tonight's beer: Evil Twin Freudian Slip
Starts off as a wall of dark-toasted bready sweetness, threaded with deep and almost-buttery caramel; grassy-floral bitterness is keeping up and making for finely-calibrated balance. Wet cardboard lurks around the middle—hello, oxidation—but not unpleasant at all. Dried dark fruits flicker around the perimeter, with dim hints of peat, earth, smoke, and suchlike.
Very thick, mostly smooth, lightly carbonated. Chewy and quite sticky on the finish. Distinctly alcoholic, more prickle than burn, about what I'd expect for 10.3% ABV. Softly drying and gently warming.
This is definitely a sipping beer: It's one of those Barleywines that isn't going to fool anyone, really, about its alcohol content. Drinkable enough, though. Intensely and complexly flavorful; nicely integrated and balanced. Possibly a bit oxidized, but not ruined by any means. I think this is the first beer I've had from Evil Twin: Not bad.
