Tonight's beer: Schmalz He'Brew Funky Jewbelation 2013
Dark dried fruits, with hints of bright cherries and wine vinegar; big dollops of dark bread, caramel, vanilla. Earthy-grassy bitterness in the background, with flickers of peat and smoke in the distance. Dries out slowly through the finish.
Medium-bodied, or a bit lighter; decently well-carbonated. Drying and surprisingly refreshing for such a big beer, with some distinct pucker. Really not much hint of the 9.4% ABV—nothing more than a vague prickle of heat. A bit of syrupy stickiness on the finish.
A big and complex beer that definitely lives up to the "Funky" in the name. There's some sour/tart here, but there's more to this beer than that (not always my experience with sour beers). Intense, but balanced and very well-integrated—it holds together better than many other massively blended beers, this young (bottled about four months ago). Surprisingly drinkable, to someone who's not that big a fan of sours. I kinda wish we'd bought another bottle to age.
