Tonight's beer: Sierra Nevada Narwhal
Roasty and dark and burnt: coffee, dark chocolate, dark bread, toast, burnt fruits; grace-notes of caramel, peat, smoke. Earthy-ashy bitterness hangs on into the aftertaste. Strong hints of dark spirits—whiskey, brandy, rum.
Thick, soft, dense; massively chewy and sticky. Decently carbonated. Eventually, kinda drying, but the beer is way (way, way) too big to be anything near refreshing. even if there's almost no hint of the 10.2% ABV: just a mild prickle.
A very nice big stout, improved (I think) by the extra few months it spent in the bottle. It's mellow than I remember, just a little, and I like it better than I remember, just a little. Intense as hell adn massively complex; very well-integrated, and poised if not exactly balanced. A superb sipping beer.
