Tonight's beer: Verhaeghe Duchesse de Bourgogne
Starts out with lots of tart-juicy fruits: cherries and red grapes, maybe something like plums; almost vinegary through the middle into the finish. Flickers of vanilla and caramel around the edges. Dries out gradually and thoroughly.
Pretty light-bodied, with decent carbonation. Plenty puckering, but also surprisingly refreshing and cleansing. Just a little soft stickiness around the end.
A delicious and very drinkable beer. Intensely flavorful, decently complex; almost but not entirely dominated by tart and vinegar, very well-integrated and clearly intentional. Goes well with food, especially seafood—it's my quasi-secret weapon with crabcakes. Every not and then I think I'm starting to get sour beers.
