Tonight's beer: Anchor Summer Beer
Bready earthiness, with ample threads of pepper and caramel. A little vague soft tartness lurks around the edge. Floral-grassy bitterness wafts past, almost in the background to start, but creeping forward; by the end, the beer is briskly bitter and pleasantly dry.
Medium-light-bodied and smooth, with good carbonation. A little chewy and sticky, but comes across primarily as clean. Drying, cleansing, and refreshing.
A delicious and drinkable American pale wheat ale (I gather, one of the archetypes of the style), plenty intense and complex, nicely integrated and balanced. An excellent beer for summer, or what's passing for it this year (lots of gray and murk and rain, not much more than a gentle roasting warmth). One of the annually recurring beers in my life, with plenty of reason.
