This afternoon's beer: Boulevard (Smokestack Series) Coffee Ale
Lots of coffee, roasty-bitter and dark, tending toward bright and acidic. Caramel and bread and toast behind, providing sweetness and balance. Hints of hoppy character around: earth and grass and flowers. Dim hints of spice and juicy fruits, probably yeast notes.
Maybe as thick as medium-bodied, very well carbonated. Some bready chewiness and a trace of syrupy stickiness. Absolutely no hint of the 9.3% ABV. Softly drying and very refreshing.
Yum! It's a pleasant surprise to find a coffee beer that's not a stout; it's equally pleasant but less surprising that such a beer, coming from Boulevard, is delicious. Intense and complex, heavily tilted to the coffee but integrated and graceful; marvelously drinkable. Definitely a great beer for the early afternoon, with nowhere to go.
