Tonight's beer: North Coast Old Stock Ale (2012)

North Coast Old Stock Ale (2012)

Lots of bready toast and caramel, counterpoised by grassy-earthy-floral bitterness. Peat and smoke, flickers of spice and dried/candied dark fruits—mostly figs and cherries, I think. A dim flicker of dark spirits—whiskey, brandy, rum—in the distance.

Bready and thick, lightly carbonated. Some chewiness and a dollop of syrupy stickiness through the softly drying finish. A dim trace of boozy prickle: no real heat.

A delicious, monstrously big barleywine-ish beer, poised and subtle and drinkable as hell, with almost no alcohol presence, especially for 11.7 % ABV. Intensity and complexity for days; nicely balanced and integrated. The extra time in the bottle seems to have mellowed this beer nicely. Wow: an astonishing beer on many levels.
