The Alchemist Heady Topper

Tonight's beer: The Alchemist Heady Topper

The Alchemist Heady Topper

Bitter. Kinda aspirin-like at first, then hints of lemon and grapefruit emerge; flowers, pine, and grass lurk around the edges. There's a little gently-caramelized pale bread, mostly a background impression. The beer goes from searingly bitter to blisteringly dry, with no discernible transition. Fruits come forward some as the beer warms (as do the pine and flowers, tough they remain subdued).

Maybe a bit on the light side of medium-bodied, gently-carbonated. Lots of stickiness and massively drying. There's a sizable amount of alcohol presence, though it could be that there's so much in the way of hops that the beer feels hotter than it is.

Huh. A decent enough Double IPA, probably overhyped to a point where roughly no beer could live up to it. I'll admit I prefer my Double IPAs more on the balanced side, but other that the opening blast of aspirin-like bitterness, this beer seems almost subdued. Not a lot more to say; my experience of this beer, compared to its reputation, has me baffled.
