Tonight's beer: Ballast Point Sculpin
Lots of bitterness to start, floral and grapefruity-citrussy, with some pine in the backbone; hints of grass and maybe lemon. Pale bread with a touch of toasty-caramel in the background. Bitter, then a flash of sweetness, then bitter again and very dry.
Medium-bodied, or maybe a little lighter, with lots of carbonation. Drying as heck, and thoroughly refreshing. Scats of resinous stickiness through the finish and beyond.
A very drinkable IPA that lives up to its reputation for excellence. Plenty intense and reasonably complex (lots of various hoppy impressions, at any rate); holds together astonishingly well, and it's about as balanced as an American IPA is likely to get. Delicious, from start to finish.
