Firestone Walker XVI

Tonight's beer: Firestone Walker XVI

Firestone Walker XVI

Lots of malt to start: dark bread, toast, caramel; dark chocolate and coffee woven in the background. Vanilla and smoke waft past early on, too, and hang around a while. Plenty of bitterness lurks, floral and grassy, mostly, with earth and peat in there some, too. Dries out pretty gradually, after a pretty sweet start, but eventually gets distinctly dry.

Maybe a bit heavier than medium-bodied, decently carbonated. A bit of alcohol presence, a gentle glow that's nothing like what I'd expect from a 13% ABV beer (especially one that's at least partially aged in whiskey barrels). Some chewiness and a bit of stickiness, into the softly drying finish.

Yum! This is amazingly drinkable for such a massive beer. Intense as hell, and likewise complex; tilts a bit to the malty-roasty-toasty side of balanced, but superbly well-integrated (the extra time—at least half a year—in the bottle may have helped here). I kinda wish I'd grabbed more the one bottle when I bought this. On the upside, I think I'm still seeing it in the stores, sometimes, when I go out beer-buying. Hmmm ....
