Tonight's beer: Heavy Seas Holy Sheet
Dark dried/candied fruits—raisins, plums/prunes, cherries, figs, gawds only know what all—backed by and braided with dark bread, caramel, and flickers of chocolate and dark baking spices (allspice, cloves, a little cinnamon and nutmeg). Grassy-floral-earthy bitterness lingers in the background, along with vague impressions of tobacco and peat, mostly noticeable around the finish. Traces of dark spirits, mainly brandy (duh) but also rum.
Medium-bodied, a little sticky, decently carbonated. Alcohol definitely present, but still pretty subdued for 9% ABV. A bit drying, tilting slightly toward refreshing.
Wow. This is a tasty and *very* drinkable beer. Complex and intense and balanced and amazingly well-integrated. Less deceptive about its alcohol content than some other dubbels—I suppose that mainly because it's aged in brandy barrels—but it's still supple and subtle and a little dangerous (the way a dubbel should be, IMO). Delicious now, but I suspect it would age nicely, if someone wanted to let some sit a while.
