The Lost Abbey Avant Garde

Tonight's beer: The Lost Abbey Avant Garde

The Lost Abbey Avant Garde

Earthy pale bread, gently sweet with a touch of caramel. Earthy-grassy bitterness emerges quickly as an effective counterpoint. Pale dried fruits—pears and apples, mostly—and a trace of spice into the finish, as the beer dries out some.

Medium-bodied, or a little lighter, with good carbonation. Gently drying, kinda refreshing and kinda filling. Some bready chewiness, a little stickiness around the end.

A very taste Biere de Garde, maybe a bit too much like some sort of pale Belgian (those pale fruits are kinda forward), but delicious on its own merits. Intense and complex, balanced and integrated. Marvelously drinkable, and entirely in keeping with the style's inherent food-friendliness; makes me wish we'd bought two bottles, so we could have this with food (probably some pretty basic roasted chicken or something like that). Another thoroughly enjoyable beer from The Lost Abbey.
