Tonight's beer: Schmaltz/He'Brew Bittersweet Lenny's R.I.P.A.
Lots of caramel and toast, threaded with peppery rye; tons of grassy-floral bitterness with undertones of pine and grapefruit. There might be some flickers of dried fruits and spice. Hints of deep caramel (almost buttery) and maybe a little whiskey. Sweet, then massively bitter, then tends toward peppery-dry.
Kinda thick and bready, some syrupy-resinous stickiness toward the finish; some gentle carbonation. Powerfully drying, but doesn't pull too hard toward refreshing. A little boozy warmth, pretty subtle for 10% ABV.
A delicious beer, one of the first Big Rye IPAs that made it into the world, as I understand it. Tons of intense and complex flavor, neatly balanced and integrated, massively drinkable. One of the beers I love returning to. I hope the sale of the Coney Island brand (and associated stuff) doesn't mean this beer won't be coming to here anymore.
