Tonight's beer: Sly Fox Ichor
Lots of dark dried fruit—cherries, raisins, figs, prunes; others tightly woven in—smeared on caramelly dark bread. Dark baking spices lurking underneath, with impressions of tobacco, leather, smoke, grass, and flowers lurking around the perimeter, with a touch of dark spirits like brandy or rum. A bit fruity-sweet to start, then dries out pretty well; some bitterness throughout, as a counterpoint.
Pretty light-bodied, decently carbonated. A little stickiness around the finish, but pretty clean and drying, with a surprising (and gentle) pucker around the finish. Wickedly subtle about the 10% ABV.
Yum. Some American breweries make quadrupels that are exaggerated, sometimes almost to the point of parody; this beer is not one of those—it would right into a lineup of the big names, brewed by monks in Belgium. Intense and complex, balanced and integrated, drinkable as hell, with roughly zero alcohol presence, and delicious from start to finish.
