This afternoon's beer: New Glarus Coffee Stout
Lots of roast front and center, mainly coffee/espresso but glimmers and glimpses of dark chocolate do show through. Deeply-toasted bread, with a trace of caramel, provides something like a foundation, if not balance. Maybe a flicker or a flash of earth-grass-peat, around the finish, and grace notes of smoke and/or ash. Roasty-bitter pretty much the whole way.
Thick and kinda soft, with carbonation that's maybe a bit on the gentle side. Lots of bready chewiness, a little stickiness especially around the end. Softly drying.
A very impressive beer, with a flavor-to-booze ratio that's pretty astounding: It's hard to imagine a beer this intense and complex is only 4.8% ABV. There is a lot of flavor here, but it's all nicely integrated, and the beer is clearly exactly as roast-happy as it needs to be. It's been a long time since I've had anything from New Glarus, and it's likely to be a while before I have another; it is to sigh.
