Anchor Big Leaf Maple

Tonight's beer: Anchor Big Leaf Maple

Anchor Big Leaf Maple

Starts out with some piney-floral bitterness, with grassy and citrussy undercurrents. Caramel and toast fill in right behind, with vaguely maple-ish syrupy traces toward the finish. Bitter, then some pretty complex sweetness, then briskly bristly-dry.

Maybe a little lighter than medium-bodied, nicely carbonated. Cleansing and pretty clean—just a little chewiness through the middle and a trace of stickiness around the end; drying and very refreshing.

This is a delicious beer, with tons of intense and complex flavor, amazingly drinkable; it's beautifully balanced and integrated. At this point, I don't often have a "wow" response to a beer, let alone one as moderate with the booze as this one—6% ABV. One of the best new-to-me beers I've had in a long time, and one that would go magnificently with autumnal cookout foods, or the roast pork we had tonight, if we'd thought of it.
