Tonight's beer: Blue Mountain Barrel House Dark Hollow (Chocolate & Coffee Aged)
Coffee, threaded thickly with dark chocolate; dark bread and caramel and toast lurking right behind. Flickers and flashes of vanilla, peat, earth, smoke, ash dance around the perimeter. Dim hints of burnt fruits in the distance. Long and bitter—mostly roasty—aftertaste.
Thick, dense, chewy, sticky. Softly carbonated. Toasty dryness, especially into the finish. No real burn or prickle from the 10% ABV: just a hint of a glow in the belly. Soft, syrupy, bready.
Egad! I remember liking the "basic" Dark Hollow quite a lot, but this beer is a masterpiece. Blisteringly intense, amazingly complex; marvelously well-balanced and -integrated. Magnificently drinkable. Clearly, the brewers at Blue Mountain Barrel House know what the hell they're doing. Seriously, this is a delicious beer; if you like coffee or coffee/chocolate stouts, this is worth seeking out.
