Deschutes Black Butte XXIV

Tonight's beer: Deschutes Black Butte XXIV

Deschutes Black Butte XXIV

Lots of chocolate to start, with dark-caramel sweetness filling in; nuts and dark fruits (dried and/or candied) right behind, on a pillow of dark bread and toast. Background flickers of earth, peat, coffee. Long and toasty finish, but still a little sweet. Dim traces of vanilla.

Kinda thick and chewy, gently carbonated, a little sticky. Some roasty drying happens, but it's not overwhelming. Roughly zero hint of the 11% ABV this beer is supposed to be backing. Filling and satisfying, maybe a soft glow in the belly.

A truly delicious beer, laden with complex and intense flavor, neatly balanced and integrated; scarily drinkable. Great to sip through on a brisk early-autumn evening; strong enough to sand the edges off a pretty rough day. Another masterfully executed beer from Deschutes.
