Tonight's beer: Southern Tier Pumking
Caramel, rich and almost buttery, toasty bordering on roasty; nuts and toffee in the weave. Pumpkin a strong presence, and some earthy-peaty-grassy bitterness. A healthy dollop of baking spices: ginger, nutmeg, cloves, cinnamon. Finishes on a flicker of rum and/or bourbon.
Not particularly thick, but pretty dense; softly carbonated. Some prickle that's probably booze, but no real heat or burn. A bit syrupy-sticky, and kinda drying by the end.
Yum! Even though I'm not pleased by the way seasonal releases are edging earlier and earlier, this is a beer I *must* buy, whenever I see it; so I bought two when I saw it on the shelves. Intense and complex, integrated and surprisingly well-balanced—just a bit on the sweet. Drinkable as hell, with alcohol presence remarkably restrained for 8.6% ABV. Pumpkin beers aren't to everyone's taste, but this is a magnificent one. It's good to be the king, indeed.
