Tonight's beer: Terrapin Monk's Revenge
Lots of bitterness, grassy and floral with some pine and maybe a spritz of citrus; some pale bread backing it up, with a dollop of caramel and some dried fruits—pale fruits, mostly, like pears, apples, and raisins. Maybe a flash of spice or light rum. Starts very bitter, evolves to some bready-fruity sweetness, snaps to a dry and bitter-again finish.
Just a little on the light side of medium-bodied, with decent gentle carbonation. Some bready chewiness and some syrupy stickiness; then ends up pretty refreshing, nicely drying, surprisingly refreshing. Some heat and prickle, but nowhere near the alcohol presence I'd expect for 9.6% ABV.
A delicious and very drinkable beer, kinda subtle and deceptive. Very intense and complex. precisely balance and tightly integrated. Tons of bitterness, though the yeast character is maybe a little subdued, and it doesn't have the tropical tapestry of, say, Raging Bitch. An excellent example of the style, though.
