Tonight's beer: Allagash Confluence
Opens with a wall of grassy-floral bitterness that parts to reveal a soft pale-fruity sweetness—apples, pears, white grapes, et al.—and a trace of pale bread. Threads of earth and barnyardy funk emerge, spread, smear into a blisteringly dry conclusion.
Very light-bodied, with some decent carbonation. A little soft, a little coating; drying and refreshing. Cleansing, scrubbing, almost scouring. Vague flinty hints around the finish.
Wow. I had high expectations for this—Allagash, Brett, what could be bad? The beer managed to exceed them. Intense and complex as heck; marvelously integrated, if kinda dominated by the Brett (which does tend to happen). Seriously drinkable, though there's enough clamoring for attention that sipping it and savoring it might be a good idea, and worth the while. Ranks right up there with Boulevard's Saison Brett, I think. Delicious, and begging to go with food.
