Tonight's beer: Anchor Big Leaf Maple
Piney-citrussy bitterness, threaded with grass, flowers, and some scattered flecks of earth and peat. Bread, toast, some dribbles and smears of caramel and maple stepped back a bit. Skates a fine and fuzzy boundary between bitter and sweet, from start to finish; nicely dry into an beyond the aftertaste. A soft touch of smoke.
Medium-bodied, mildly carbonated; some chewiness and a fair amount of stickiness, especially around the end. Drying and refreshing, cleansing and scrubbing. A vague flinty edge.
A delicious and very drinkable amber ale, a beautifully autumnal beer. Packed with intense and complex flavor, nicely balanced and integrated. I usually like Anchor's beers a lot, and this is no exception. Probably a glorious beer to pair with food. Yum!
