Tonight's beer: Weyerbacher Eighteen
Chocolate and caramel and dark toast/bread to start, with rich layers of dark baking spices—mainly cloves—and bright almost-candied fruit—bananas, of course, but vague musky-tropical hints. Background impressions of grass and flowers, toffee and nuts, coffee; possibilities of vanilla and rum. Starts quite sweet, dries gradually but pretty thoroughly.
Pretty close to medium-bodied: heavy and a little dense, but not at all viscous. Gently carbonated. Finishes pretty clean, almost refreshing. Subtle but present booziness; nothing out of the way for 11.1% ABV, but definitely there.
Huh. When I had this beer last (about the middle of July), it was pretty hot and aggro; it's mellowed a lot, already. It's still crazy-intense, and very complex, but it seems more balanced and better integrated. Impressively drinkable Supple and subtle and almost graceful. So it's not Aventinus: it's still a very respectable effort, and a worthwhile anniversary beer.
