Tonight's beer: Liefmans Goudenband
Dark fruits—cherries, grapes, plums—somewhat tart but not overpoweringly so. Some dark bread and a little toasty caramel; a dash of red wine vinegar. Hints of wood and vanilla and some earthy funk in the interstices. Tart, then a little sweet, then softly dry.
Light-bodied, bright and juicy, amply carbonated. Bracing and a little puckering, surprisingly refreshing for 8% ABV. A little stickiness in the finish, but overall pretty clean, without much alcohol presence.
Very nice. In my head, still, sour beers tend to hide their lights under bushels of red wine vinegar; this doesn't. Intense and surprisingly complex; nicely integrated (if not exactly balanced). Delicious and drinkable, a little deceptive about the alcohol content. I keep thinking this, but I just might be coming to some sort of understanding with the sour.
