Ommegang Scythe & Sickle

Tonight's beer: Ommegang Scythe & Sickle

Ommegang Scythe & Sickle

Starts off laden with toast and caramel, with some dried and candied fruits lurking: apples, pears, bananas. Earthy-peaty bitterness in the background, flecked with spice and a little pepper. Nuts and toffee and a touch of peat around the perimeter. Starts a little sweet, then gradually very dry.

Medium-bodied, with lots of carbonation. Kinda soft, but distinctly smooth and slick. A bit chewy and sticky, eventually making its way to drying and refreshing. Finishes pretty clean and refreshing, with an almost-astringent scrubbing vibe.

Nice! Tons of character from what must be a complex and complicated malt bill, balanced by decent hopping; intense for 5.8% ABV, and it's pretty clear to me it's exactly what the brewery intended. Impressively drinkable and delicious. I've seen some mixed reviews of this, but Ommegang hasn't ever disappointed me.
