Tonight's beer: Ommegang/Brasserie D'Achouffe Gnomegang

Ommegang/Brasserie D'Achouffe Gnomegang

Opens lightly dry and startlingly bitter—grassy, floral, and earthy—with hints of pale dried fruits like apples, pears, and white grapes; maybe some pineapples, peaches, and melons around the perimeter. Dim hints of pepper and spice. Some pale bread and a little caramel around the middle; them, quickly, earthy-funky and (again) very dry.

On the light side, very highly carbonated. Impressively dry; bracing and refreshing. Very little hint of the 9.5% ABV punch the beer is packing. A little sticky around the finish, but mostly clean.

A collaboration between two amazing breweries (which both just so happen to be owned by Duvel Morrtgat), which I pulled from the beer fridge maybe fifteen minutes before learning that Duvel Moortgat had made arrangements to purchase one of my favorite American breweries: boulevard. I have a feeling Boulevard will be in good hands.

This beer is pretty amazing, really: Deeply intense and staggeringly complex; marvelously integrated and balanced; deliriously drinkable. Definitely a beer that would go magnificently with food. Stylistically, it sits almost exactly on the border between Belgian Strong Pale ale and Saison. That's a good place to be.
