Tonight's beer: Schmaltz He'Brew Bittersweet Lenny's R.I.P.A.
Starts off almost barleywine-like, with lots od caramel-toasty bready sweetness; then the bitterness arrives, a cross between a tapestry and an avalanche: grassy and floral, mainly, with plentiful threads of citrus and pine. Flickers of pepper, spice, dried/candied fruit (figs, plums, et al.) in the gaps and around the edges. Dries out gradually but thoroughly.
Thick and bready, chewy, with some syrupy stickiness into the back end. Decently carbonated. A little dense, a little abrasive; a bit drying into the finish, gently scrubbing. Not much trace of the 10% ABV.
Yum! One of my favorites, and one I hope the changes to ownership (mainly to the Coney Island brand, as I understand) won't break the distribution to around here. Intense and complex for days, nicely integrated and surprisingly well-balanced, given the style. Staggeringly drinkable and alarmingly subtle and deceptive. Delicious, and beautiful in the glass (as a bonus).
