Tonight's beer: Sweetwater (Dank Tank) The Gimp
Lots of dark bread and caramel and toast up-front, with that almost-buttery background note I sometimes get that doesn't seem like diacetyl (or any other off note, really). Some earthy-peaty-grassy bitterness arises around the middle, then sinks back into the sweetness. Hints of smoke and dried dark fruits around the edges.
Thick, chewy, sticky, mildly carbonated. A little boozy glow, but still pretty subtle for 10.3% ABV. Maybe a little drying on a very long syrupy finish. Mostly smooth.
A delicious old ale, packing a pretty serious alcohol punch with notable grace. Intense and complex enough to justify a little booziness, nicely balanced and integrated. Impressively drinkable. I haven't had lots of Sweetwater's beers (because they don't have distribution around me) but the ones I've had have impressed me lots.
