Tonight's beer: Weyerbacher Seventeen
Pale bread, touched with caramel; pale fruits—mainly pears and apples—and a strong smear of bright citrus. Pepper and spice emerge through the middle. Dries out a good deal into the aftertaste and beyond. Dim flickers of light spirits—vodka, pale rum—around the perimeter.
A bit on the thick side, kinda soft, chewy and sticky; more bready than syrupy. Gently carbonated. A soft boozy glow, nothing like I'd expect for 10.5% ABV. Eventually, gradually drying, and surprisingly refreshing for such a big beer.
A delicious beer, massively drinkable. Intense and complex flavors, nicely balanced and beautifully integrated. I think I remember this beer as being pretty hot when fresh; it's mellowed quite a bit, I think. Alcohol is present, but carried with impressive subtlety and grace. I do love Weyerbacher's anniversary beers.
