Tonight's beer: Lagunitas Brown Shugga'
Lots of bitterness—pine and citrus (mostly grapefruit, some lime and orange) with flickers of flowers, grass, musk, and tropical fruits. Some dark bread, caramel, toast making for something akin to balance, momentarily; some baking spice and some dried fruit flash past right before the beer dries out. Maybe a dim flicker of dark spirits—mostly whisky, a splash of rum—in the aftertaste.
Pretty medium-bodied, gently-carbonated. A little bready-chewy and a bit sticky. Nicely drying on the finish, and softly warming—the latter being the only hint of a warming of the 9.9% ABV.
Yum! This is one of my favorite beers that comes around this time of year. Bit and brawny and surprisingly well-balanced. Intense as hell and almost staggeringly complex, beautifully integrated and delicious and deliriously drinkable. Supple and subtle and sneaky. A marvelously interstitial beer, bordering on maybe half a dozen styles, uniquely its own thing.
