Anchor Big Leaf Maple

Tonight's beer: Anchor Big Leaf Maple

Anchor Big Leaf Maple

Impressively bitter to start—citrus (mostly grapefruit) and pine, backed by grass and slightly-musky flowers; softly-toasted bread and warm caramel arise through the middle. Flecks of maple syrup, honey, smoke around the edges. Wraps up briskly dry.

Bready-chewy, maybe a little thicker than medium-bodied, nicely carbonated. A trace of soft stickiness on the otherwise clean and cleansing and remarkably refreshing finish.

A delicious, delicious beer, beautiful in the glass and downright drinkable. Complexly flavorful: intense and complex, smoothly integrated and extraordinarily well-balanced. As a fall seasonal, it's an entirely pleasant change of pace from pumpkin beers, märzen lagers, and even harvest beers. I look forward to seeing this again next fall.
