Brooklyn Monster (2012)

Tonight's beer: Brooklyn Monster (2012)

Brooklyn Monster (2012)

Lots of caramel and toast; rich bready sweetness. Toffee and nuts and dried fruits (figs, cherries, plums) threaded densely throughout. Some earthy-grassy-peaty bitterness around the edges. Flecks of baking spices, vanilla, butter, other dark spiritous notes. Starts sweet, then evolves to mildly bittersweet. Eventually dries out, a little.

Thick and soft and chewy, some stickiness into the finish. Filling and satisfying; feels massive but has almost no alcohol presence. Maybe some soft drying and some gentle glow.

This is an excellent barleywine that has been improved (probably) by almost a year in the bottle. Tons of flavor, here: intense and complex as you'd want, nicely balanced and beautifully integrated. Supple and subtle and at least a little dangerous and deceptive. It's kinda a pity Brooklyn have decided to stop making this beer, btu I gather barleywines are expensive to make: I can't snark too hard when I don't know all the business. I will miss this beer, though.
