Tonight's beer: He'Brew (Schmaltz) Death of a Contract Brewer

He'Brew (Schmaltz) Death of a Contract Brewer

Lots and lots (and lots and lots) of bitterness: a complex unraveling of dark roasts—mainly chocolate, a little coffee—and bright piney citrus—mainly grapefruit, flecks of lemon and orange. Specks of grass, flowers, musk, peppers, spice. Possibilities of toast and caramel around the edges. Very bitter, then a little sweet, then quite dry.

Thick and bready, decently carbonated. Soft and coating, slowly drying. Scrubbing and scouring, but awfully massive to be anything like refreshing. Burly, but not really boozy.

If this is how Schmaltz/He'Brew celebrate, they need more things to celebrate: This is an impressive and delicious beer. Crazily complex and intense, beautifully well-integrated but more poised than balanced—there is a lot of bitter, here. Amazingly drinkable. An eccellent example of the style.
