Tonight's beer: Ommegang Take the Black
Starts with dark chocolate and coffee, threaded with caramel and dried/candied rake fruits (cherries, plums, raisins, etc.); leather, smoke, spice (dark baking spices like cloves and allspice; a dim sprinkling of something like ginger and maybe coriander), earth, peat, grass around the perimeter. Roasty-bitter, then a brief flicker of sweet, then very dry.
Pretty light-bodied for 7% ABV, with lots of lively carbonation. Briskly drying, surprisingly close to refreshing; a little stickiness, especially around the finish, but for the most part clean and almost cleansing. Not much detectable alcohol presence.
It's a Belgian! It's a stout! It's delicious, which shouldn't be a shock, as it's brewed by Ommegang. Intense and immensely complex; nicely integrated and beautifully well-balanced. Drinkable as hell, practically slurpable. I couldn't care less about Game of Thrones, but I'm a huge fan of Ommegang; and this beer is excellent.
